Plastic surgery blog: Guys need to watch the gut too!

Don't get caught with your belly in your lap!

It is rarely  table conversation how a man looks in his swimming trunks; but ,in this day of technology, camera phones ,and YouTube it is important that guys notice if their stomach hangs over their belt. A recent article in the Daily Post made a full on attempt to give men the secrets to losing the fat. The article explained the two types of fat, subcutaneous fat and visceral fat.

Visceral fat is inside the abdominal wall; subcutaneous fan is outside the abdominal wall, the stuff you can grab. It’s commonly believed that visceral fat is more harmful, associated with more health risks than subcutaneous fat. While that’s generally true, it’s not 100 percent the case. There’s some evidence subcutaneous fat isn’t as benign as some people think.  The main tip for men to lose the fat? Stop (or moderate )drinking beer.

Dr Krieger consults with patients at many different stages of the fight against obesity. Men with a beer belly generally do well with aggressive liposuction. The majority of the fat must be subcutaneous as that is the only fat that is removed with liposuction. Typically Dr Krieger will also recommend liposuction of the love handles and the lower back. This will encompass the entire waist. Often he is able to remove the maximum amount that can be removed in one setting. The patient will need to wear an abdominal binder for 3-4 weeks. This helps to re-drape the skin.  The binder can be worn under a shirt and is virtually undetectable. Once the initial healing period is over most men loose 2-3 inches or more off of their waistline.

Plastic surgery blog:Tanning beds remain the enemy

Can anything good come out of the tanning bed?

It  is hard to convince a society that believes “everybody looks better with a little color” to stay out of the tanning beds. This is especially difficult in the winter months and in the beginning of swimsuit season. It may become a bit easier to keep teens out of the tanning beds according to NBC 12 recent report.  A potential ban on the use of tanning beds by people under 18 was among the recommendations Thursday by U.S. health advisers who said more measures are needed to protect consumers — especially teens — from skin-cancer risks posed by the devices. The panel of advisers to the Food and Drug Administration also recommended that the agency add bolder warning labels to tanning beds, change how they are regulated by the FDA, and require parental consent, the Associated Press reported.

Dr Krieger sees patients once the sun damage has  already begun to appear. He can treat sun damaged skin with laser resurfacing, skin care services, and Thermage. Of course the best results are seen when patients also use medical skin care treatments at home.  It is important that patients do not tan their skin after surgery if there is bruising.  The risk of the area becoming permanently darker than the rest of the skin is probable. It is also important not to tan scars from surgery for a year as they too may become darker. Ideally patients will not tan at all.

Plastic sugery blog: Cancer and weight gain… is there a connection?

Cancer and obesity have strong links

An informative report on NBC channel 12 reiterated what many already knew about obesity . Experts have found clear links between being overweight and cancers of the breast, pancreas, kidney, esophagus, uterus, colon and rectum. It may also be involved in several other types of cancer. Excess weight raises the risk of other serious diseases, especially diabetes, heart disease and stroke, too. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, excess body fat is second only to smoking as a cause of cancer. And it seems that the more overweight you are, the greater the risk. It is promising to know that according to the article, losing even 5 to 10 percent of your total weight can have health benefits.

Dr Krieger performs post massive weight loss plastic surgery on patients who have worked very hard to lose the weight and have loose skin as a result. It is very important to spread the word that surgery is available to help patients experience beauty after weight loss. Losing the weight is always a better choice than keeping the weight on; however, patients are thrilled to know they can look beautiful after reaching their weight loss goals. Dr Krieger performs brachioplasty (arms), facelift, upper and lower bodylift,,thighlift ,and reconstructive breastlift often times in multiple procedures. The satisfaction rate for Dr Krieger’s  post massive weight loss patients remains near 100%.*

Plastic surgery blog:Puberty is natural but parents should be watchful

Teens going through puberty need special parental attention to their growth

Channel 12 recently reported on the signs parents should look for when the pubescent years approach.  Could your little girl need a bra already? Is that deep voice really your youngest son’s? A child’s puberty can take you by surprise, even when it’s right on time. Most girls start to mature physically between the ages of 8 and 13; boys, between 9 and 14. The pituitary gland, at the base of the brain, releases the hormones that jumpstart a child’s sexual development. The result is a combination of physical, emotional and social changes that can rock the world of both parent and child. It is important to discern between what is normal development and what can be a potential growth of excess tissue.

Dr Krieger is one of the foremost experts on post bariatric plastic surgery. What he has found is that a number of the bariatric patients had excessive breast tissue when they were teenagers. In young teen girls they could have shown symptoms of numbness in the fingers, lower back pain and even grooves in the shoulders.  Dr Krieger performs breast reduction and is able to remove excess tissue which in many cases allows the teen to  become more active thus reducing the possibility of morbid obesity. In males the excessive breast tissue growth is gynecomastia. Many teenage boys are too embarrassed to take their shirts off and often skip gym and excercise. Dr Krieger performs gynecomastia surgery and many of the male teen patients feel the results were life changing.

Plastic surgery blog: Eyebrows are the new focus

Filed under: Uncategorized — by doctorkrieger @ 8:00 am
If the eyes are the window to the soul then eyebrows must be decorative

Every season has it’s” thing”. This season it is -believe it or not- the eyebrows. According to News Channel12 your look is incomplete without the proper eyebrow arch and grooming. “Eyebrows are so important, they really help shape and define your face,” notes Hollywood brow expert Anastasia Soare, who does brow shape-ups for celebrities like Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Garner.  The report actually gives tips to help you get pretty arches that are perfect for you.

Dr Krieger consults with women wanting an updated look for their face. Often they overlook the eyes and the brow. Dr Krieger points out that the eyes and brow alone can add years to a person’s overall appearance.  Women with a drooping brow sometimes have an angry or tired appearance.  Dr Krieger shows his patients that aesthetically the goal is to have the eyebrow match the protruding portion of the skull. When having the eyebrows plucked or arched it is imperative that arch is not too high. Dr Krieger may recommend an endoscopic brow lift to raise the brow to its proper place, this will give the eyes a more open look, if the eyelids are droopy Dr Krieger will perform an eyelid lift or blephoralasty to remove the sagging skin from the eyelid. This truly opens the eyes for an alert and youthful look.

Plastic surgery blog:Wedding dress trends are sure to affect plastic surgery request

Plastic surgery can help make your wedding dress a crowd favorite!

Channel12 news gave us a sneak peek into the hottest wedding dress trends for 2010. The trends are bold and very different. They are showing everything from a 50’s flair to black accents. Yes, black accents on a white wedding dress!

Bridal Fashion Week is the chance for top designers to show off their new lines, and our chance to find out what’s hot in wedding fashion. There are 10 wedding dress trends soon to hit your local bridal salon in the channel 10 news report. The wedding day is considered one of the most important days of a woman’s life.

Dr Krieger consults with brides concerning changes that they would like to consider prior to their wedding day. The most common surgical procedures requested are breast augmentation and liposuction. Both of these procedures ideally should have a healing period of approximately 3 months. This will allow for any delays in healing. When choosing breast implants brides need to remember to allow for initial swelling which can last up to 3 months. Liposuction will also cause swelling after surgery and a compression garment must be worn following the surgery for 3-4 weeks. It is best to plan for fittings of the wedding dress after the swelling has subsided and the breast implants have settled down. Dr Krieger reminds patients when making wedding plans  to plan for body changes that they will appreciate for a lifetime not just on the wedding day.

Plastic surgery blog: Jewelry style this season is big and obvious ;will plastic surgery follow the trend?

Will plastic surgery follow the big jewelry trend?

As we enter the Spring Summer season recession inspired styles have taken over. Jewelry has embraced the trend with large pieces made out of less than precious metals. Materials include everything from plastic to wood to rubber.  This all according to a recent report on channel 12 news. Big trends seen everywhere include cascades of pearls mixed with matte metal chains; rhinestones partnered with ribbon; and rosettes that anchor asymmetrical assemblages of beads, chains, leather and fabric. Metals don’t aspire to impersonate the precious; they’re content to look like they belong in a hardware store. One cannot help but to wonder will the “big trend” cross over into plastic surgery? Namely breast implants?

Dr Krieger consults with patients seeking breast augmentation with breast implants.  It is still rare that a woman will request an extremely large implant. There were trends back in the late eighties and early nineties when very large implants were requested. Patients were guest on talk shows and doctors bragged about “stacking” two implants if they could not get the implant big enough. The results of this trend were some very nasty complications. Excessive scar tissue or encapsulation was the biggest issue but there was also a higher incidence of infection and shifting of the implants.   Dr Krieger recommends the best sizing based on women’s natural attributes such as height, weight, amount of breast tissue and other factors.

Plastic surgery blog:You need the right of sleep to maintain your weight

Be careful not to let the party rob you of sleep!

A recent local story on channel 12 warned people about the lack of sleep and the correlation between weight gain. One careful study of almost 60,000 women found that:Sleeping five hours or less a night raised the risk of obesity by 15 percent. Sleeping six hours a night raised the risk of obesity by 6 percent. Sleeping more than seven hours a night did not raise the risk of obesity.  It is difficult in this day and age to carve out enough time for everything  including sleep. It is necessary to aim for  7 plus hours of sleep . If we don’t ,we pay on the inside and out.

Dr Krieger helps patients benefit from plastic surgery after massive weight loss.  Many patients had no idea that they would have the large amounts of loose skin that  is left behind.  The skin which is often times in the arms, face, neck, abdomen, and lower back must be removed with surgery. Dr Krieger explains to patients that depending on the amount of loose skin the goal is to remove as much skin as possible  in the first surgery.  Dr Krieger helps patients to group surgeries together for the best possible recovery and result. Most often he recommends the body procedures together, bodylift, and  brachioplasty. The breast lift and augmentation can be performed with a facelift. The goal is to group surgeries together in which the patients can have an effective recovery and experience.

Plastic Surgery Blog: The SCD Diet

Digestive problems can lead to weight gain and unsightly fat areas on the body

The specific carbohydrate diet can alleviate and cure digestive disorders. A recent local article reveled the rules of this diet that is up to 75% effective. Those who suffer from digestive disorders typically have an overgrowth and imbalance of microbial flora that feed on carbs. This special diet eliminates the carbs that they feed on so that these bacteria starve and die. Grain free, lactose free, and sucrose free are the three components of this diet. Popular items like fruit, nuts, eggs, non processed meats, poultry, breads with gluten-free flour can be eaten. The restricted list includes all sugars (except Honey), canned foods, grains, soy milk, cream, starchy vegetables, and processed meats.

After following a restricted diet weight loss is inevitable. Dr. Krieger offers body contouring procedures after weight loss naturally or by bariatric plastic surgery. Body lift surgery tones the loose skin on the outer thighs, butt, and abs in one safe procedure. Extended adominoplasty, beast reduction, and lifts of the buttocks, arms, breast, and face and neck are also available. All of these body contouring methods are described in the post weight loss surgery section of Dr. Krieger’s informative website.

Plastic Surgery Blog:Proper Crunches

Stomach crunches can help; plastic surgery perfects!

A recent local video guide showcases the proper way to do various exercises. The most common home exercise is most likely the crunch or sit-ups. Many people don’t do these correctly and end up straining their back and not get much of a workout benefit. Feet should be elevated onto a bench with the back lying flat on a mat or the floor. Abs should be contracted and brought toward the knees. At the top of the crunch it should be held-this strengthens the abdominal wall.

If you suffer from weak abdominal muscles you may find it difficult to be able to properly tone your midsection. Adominoplasty or a tummy tuck procedure performed  by Dr. Krieger can strengthen the abdominal muscles beneath the skin. Tummy tucks are done with a horizontal incision that is just above the pubic area. The scar can be concealed with undergarments or swim wear. Weak muscles are sutured together for added strength. Liposuction is commonly performed to get rid of excess fat. Excess skin typically also needs to be removed from the upper abdomen for an overall flawless, flat result.
